The Holiday Party Dilemma

Article from Julie Luther of Julie Luther's PurEnergy Health and Wellness.  Check out her link to her site on the sidebar!!!!  Thank you so much Julie for this information!!!!!!!!!!

The holiday season is upon us.  This can mean a barrage of parties and gatherings that spell disaster for your waistline.  In fact the research shows that the average American adds a whopping five pounds to their waistline in the five short weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.  How can you have all the fun you want and still weigh no more on January 1 than you do today?  Arm yourself with some knowledge of the number of calories in some of your favorite holiday foods and drinks and find a way to work off the extra calories!

The fact of the matter is 3500 calories = one pound (gained or lost).  So when you consume an extra 500 calories daily, you gain 1 pound of ugly fat per week.  And believe me it is certainly easy to consume 500 calories at a party.  Here are some examples of typical party foods and drinks and their accompanying calories.

  • The Neighborhood Party
The hosts are serving all sorts of fattening foods and plenty of wine. Yummy!  So you opt for a glass of wine and head for the cheese and cracker tray...

One 5 oz. glass of wine = 100 calories

            4 crackers = 70 calories

            1 oz cheese = 120

Total = 290 calories

Now, be realistic.  You are at the party for a couple of hours.  Do you stop with just one (5 oz.) glass of wine and 4 crackers?  Ok, so let’s double the amount.  That adds up to 580 calories.  Being realistic still, do you think you will stop with 10 oz. of wine and 8 crackers??  Anyway you get the picture.

  • The Office Party
Your office is hosting a “bring your own dessert” party.  While your co-workers are loading their plates with a little of everything, you choose a slab of coconut cake and a cup of coffee.

            Coconut Cake = 398 calories

Coffee with creamer = (1 tablespoon) 40 calories

            Sugar = (1 tablespoon) 15 calories

            Total = 453 calories

So as you see it is super easy to eat the calories.
To work them off however takes time and effort. For example for a 150 man to exercise off 500 calories requires that he either…

  • Jog for 1 hour and 20 minutes at 6 mph
  • Bike for 50 minutes at 12 mph
  • Walk for 90 minutes at 4.5 mph

So if you plan on partying…wake early to exercise the calories off FIRST, to earn the luxury of partying later in the day!

I am going to post the recipe but you can go HERE for the beautiful pictures that she took with hers on the directions.  For sure a new one that I will keep in my book for those times that you need something and don't have a lot of time.

Excited!!

Well, my sweet sister-in-law, Ashley, has received the "Transformation" Plan and is so excited to get started.  I can't wait!!!!  I love to be a cheerleader!!!!

I got an e-mail from Tara and she has lost another 8 pounds!!!!!!  ROCK ON!!!!!!!

I have another great friend that posted yesterday, Darla, that has lost 40 pounds!!!!!!  WHOOT!!!!!

Leslie, that ran the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Savannah Ga. KILLED HER RACE!!!!  It was awesome receiving text messages as she ran.  What an exciting time!!!!!

I am going to be getting with Darla and getting her story.  She has agreed to share here.  I'm so excited about getting to share.

My running is going great!!!!!  Loving the App, Map My Run.  I use it mostly on my laptop and not my iPad or phone.  It just works better.  I have also discovered Yoga.  I'm not one that has gone to yoga before in the gym or in other places.  There seemed to be something in me that was leery of it because of the "New Age" ties and was just weary of it.  I had ordered a set of videos from Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser and not really realizing there was a Yoga video in the group. I got them in the mail.  The video is wonderful!  It's not New Age at all.  It has made the biggest difference in my running, my mood, and my flexibility.  It is awesome!!!!!!

The holiday season is coming......Do you have a plan? Are you making anything "healthy" for your Thanksgiving dinner?  How are you going to manage "healthy living and eating"?  Please share!!!!!

Chicken and Pasta---SUPER EASY!!!!!

This is one of my favorites because I LOVE PASTA!!!!!  It's an easy go to for a quick dinner that everyone will like.

Chicken and Pasta

1 pound of boneless/skinless, cut into bite sized pieces
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
1 tsp basil, dried
1/2 tsp oregano
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 large can of diced tomatoes or a jar of home canned tomatoes
1 pound of any kind of pasta (prefer Whole Wheat)

Place chicken, garlic and olive oil in saute pan.  Saute chicken until it's cooked.  Add basil, oregano, salt and pepper and tomatoes.  Turn down to medium low so that water can evaporate from the tomatoes and sauce will thicken.  Cook pasta as directed.  When pasta is completed, drain and toss in pan with tomatoes and chicken.  Mix well.  Serve immediately with Parmesan cheese if you like.

Serve with crusty bread and a salad and it's a wonderful dinner on the table!!!!!!!!  ENJOY!!!!!

Water Power

Water Power

To rule the track, hit the pool.  Recent research from India found that two months of deep-water running (participants hoofed it for an hour, three times a week) significantly imporoved endurance on land.  “Water provides resistance, increasing the intensity of running says Patrick Milroy, M.D. author of Running Anatomy.  To do it, strap on a flotation belt or hold a foam noodle behind your back and head to the deep end: Jog, bringing your knees no higher than your hips and kicking your rear foot toward your butt.

Easy Encouragement!!!!!

My little one (5 year old) has posters with post-it notes on them.  We use them for review of sight words, numbers and letters.  It's a great activity and encouraging when he sees how much he knows.  It's just amazing to watch!!!!!!  This is what his boards look like...
The bright colors help.  It's a lot of fun.  So I was thinking.  If this is good for a Kindergartner, then it would be good for a 40 (cough, cough) year old.  So I made one for me.  They are very simple because it would not have been hard for me to get VERY detailed and that seems to be a bit overwhelming and not very helpful.  So this is what mine looks like.....

Well, now you know what mine looks like.  Try and make one for yourself.  Post it somewhere that you see it often.  It's fun to make.  Be REALISTIC!!!!!!!

Now....GET MOVING!!!!!!

EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!!!  What a week!  It's been so great!!!!!  I wrote the other week about my wake up call.  What smacked me up-side the head really did a GREAT job.  I have been back at it!  I have ran. I have done yoga. I am watching my diet. I'm getting in my water.  So very grateful and so excited.  I have some exciting news.........

First, I have a great friend running the Rock N Roll Half Marathon tomorrow in Savannah Georgia.  I am so excited for her and will be praying for her as she runs.  I will even get a text to follow her on her journey while she is running.  I have been just encouraging her since she started on this journey.  She is going to do GREAT!!!  I can't wait to hear from her!!!!!!!!  Game On Leslie!!!!!!  Go Girl!!!!! Leave a message to encourage her!!!!!!  She would love it!!!!!

Second, my sweet sister-in-law has taken on the Transformation Challenge.  I e-mailed her all of the pages.  I hope that I didn't overwhelm her.  She has agreed to keep me posted.  I have to admit that she has picked a difficult time to start but Ashley has the willpower to do what she wants.  I'm so excited for her.  I'm anxious to hear how she does.  She has agreed to keep me posted and let me know how it's going.  She's also agreed to let me know if I need to add things to the program that would be helpful to her.  Please leave messages to encourage her!!!!!!!

Thirdly, I'm excited to be a part of an upcoming program.  If your remember a couple of weeks ago, I posted about someone that really encourages me on her blog post  and on Facebook.  Her name is Jenny Grothe.  She is putting together a program and I have signed up to be a part of it.  Its exciting and so much fun.  I can't wait!!!!!!!!

Last but not least, one of the things that Jenny had mentioned on her blog and Facebook was making a poster or "goals" so to speak.  I am going to be doing that today.  We have posters for Kaleb and his letters, numbers and sight words.  We have his rules and consequences on 2 other posters.  They work great for him so Mom has decided they just might work for me.  I'll make mine and then I'll post a picture of mine and you can make yours!!!!!  It just helps to keep it "in your face".  This is going to be fun!!!!!!  Make yours and you can share it with me!!!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!!!  Get out and MOVE!!!!!!!

Eat Up, Slim Down

EAT UP, SLIM DOWN

Want to fry more flab? Stop by the kitchen before heading to the gym.  Eating a low-glycemic, fructose-free meal two hours prior to a workout prompts your body to use fat (instead of carbohydrates) as fuel, according to a new research published in the European Journal of Applied Physicology.  “High-glycemic foods {those that elevate blood sugar levels} increase insulin, which hampers fat burning.” Says Jim White, R.D., a spokesman for the Academy of Nutritional and Dietetics.  “Likewise, fructose [Fruit sugar] ups lactate levels, with the same result.”  To maximize the blast, opt for lean proteins, beans, whole grains, and nuts.

Chew On This!

Chew On This

Cutting back on calories could be as easy as cutting up your chow.  New research from Arizona State University found that people who were given a bael with cream cheese that had been sliced into foru pieces ate less of it that those who received a “whole” one.  Suprinsingly, the effect lasted through their next meal, whe the bitz-size- protion group consumed 40% fewer calories that their counter parts.  “This shows that you can trick your brain into thinking you’re taking in more that you actually are,” says lead researcher Devin Wadher.  And in case you think you’re just psyching your serf out, another study revealed that rats behaved similarly, suggesting that this perception is hardwired.  It may be time to bring finger food back into fashion.
